Tell Your Legislators: Strengthen Virginia’s Voting Rights Act!
With pivotal elections in 2026, it’s more important than ever that Virginians’ voting rights are protected. At a time when too many states are moving backwards and voting rights are increasingly under attack at the federal level, Virginia has the opportunity to lead the way for equal access to the right to vote.
House Bill 967 (HB967) would substantially strengthen Virginia’s state-level voting rights act by:
Bolstering the ability of Virginia’s voters to challenge discriminatory voting practices
Expanding language access and assistance for voters with limited English proficiency so that they can fully participate in the democratic process
Increasing transparency and accountability to prevent discriminatory changes to voting practices
Updating key technical pieces of the Virginia Voting Rights Act to preserve these safeguards in the face of weakened federal protections and evolving threats to voting rights
In recent years, Virginia has expanded access to the ballot box, including offering 45 days of no–excuse early voting, the implementation of same day voter registration, and the elimination of a strict voter ID law. When the 2021 Virginia Voting Rights Act was signed into law, Virginia became the only southern state - and one of only eight states nationally - to have its own state-level voting rights act. ,.
But we can - and must - go further, particularly as voting rights are under attack by a hostile and unpredictable federal administration.
Virginia voters can’t wait; join us in encouraging your representatives to support HB967 today.
