Ask Your State Senator to Co-Sponsor the Immigrant Legal Defense Fund Amendment #847
With a federal administration committed to the mass detention and deportation of immigrants, our state legislature must urgently intervene to protect immigrants who live, work and pay taxes in Massachusetts.
The Massachusetts State Senate has the opportunity to include funding for immigrant legal defense in their final budget. Please email your State Senator and urge them to co-sponsor the Immigrant Legal Defense Fund Budget Amendment, Amendment #847, which would create a public-funded program to provide no-cost immigration legal services to Massachusetts immigrants at imminent risk of deportation, especially those held in federal immigration detention. We encourage people to make it as personalized as possible!
Why it matters: There is no right to a government-paid lawyer in immigration court. Immigrants who cannot afford a lawyer must navigate our complex immigration system alone. Immigrants are 5x more likely to win relief from deportation if they are represented by counsel. Detained immigrants with a lawyer are 10x more likely.
