Ask your Supervisor to support expanding San Francisco’s speed camera program

A little more than one year since launching in San Francisco, speed cameras have proven a powerful solution for addressing the #1 cause of severe and fatal traffic crashes in our city.

According to data from the SFMTA, the share of drivers speeding 10 MPH or more is down nearly 80% across the 33 speed camera locations. And drivers are changing their behavior: about two-thirds of drivers who have received a warning or citation did not get another one.

We need this lifesaving solution at more than 33 locations ASAP given how prevalent speeding is, which the camera data itself has shown. Safe speeds are crucial in preventing crashes – and reducing a crash’s severity if one happens.

But San Francisco’s currently only allowed to have speed cameras at 33 locations within current law, plus it’s a five-year pilot.

District 6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey recently introduced a resolution at the Board of Supervisors for the City to begin pursuing an expansion of the program

Ask your Supervisor to support the resolution and every solution possible to address dangerous speeding.
