The Manitoba Government has begun planning for its 2027 budget. The annual budget is one of the most important opportunities to make concrete commitments and investments to address housing insecurity and homelessness. If commitments aren’t made in this budget, we may have to wait another year for meaningful action.

That’s why we’re asking you now to remind the Manitoba government that investments in social housing and the supports tenants need must be a priority in Budget 2027.

In 2024, the Right to Housing Coalition identified a need for 1,000 new social housing units each year for 10 years, along with $150 million in annual investment over the same period to maintain the existing supply.

The Province has not made the annual investments needed to stay on track. As a result, the number of new social housing units that must be added each year to meet the 10,000-unit goal by 2034 is increasing, as is the investment needed to maintain the existing social housing supply.

While the government is taking steps in the right direction, the scale of investment needs to increase substantially if Manitoba is going to address housing insecurity and homelessness in a meaningful and lasting way.
