Ban Israel from Paris 2024 for Breaking the Olympic Truce
We call on the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, to ask the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to expel Israel from the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games for breaking the Olympic Truce and for multiple breaches of UN Conventions and Resolutions.
The Olympic Truce is a millenia-old tradition of ceasefire during the Games to promote non-violent interactions between states and to allow for the safe passage of athletes and officials to and from the competitions. The IOC and the United Nations ask all states to observe the Olympic Truce which begins 7 days before the Olympic Games and ends 7 days after the Paralympic Games. This year’s truce is effective from 19th July-15th September 2024. During this time, no inter-state aggressions or attacks on athletes should occur.
Israel’s recent bombings of Lebanon and Yemen on the 19th and 20th July and its continued attacks on Palestine are clear violations of the Olympic Truce, and a major threat to world peace. In Palestine alone, 342 athletes have been killed by Israel since October, including Olympic athletes and coaches, with this number rising daily. Athletes have no freedom of movement, and are subject to constant border checks. Every sports facility in Gaza has been either damaged or deliberately destroyed.
Russia’s failure to observe the Olympic Truce just days after the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics was cited by the IOC as a major reason for its expulsion from international sport. South Africa was banned during the Apartheid Era. The United Nations must intervene and call on the IOC and other global sporting federations to expel Israel from Paris 2024 for violating the Olympic Truce and for implementing an apartheid regime in Palestine.
