Build Black Power In SF: 2022 Redistricting Ask

We want the San Francisco Redistricting Task Force to respect the Black community as a "community of interest" and help us build Black power in San Francisco. We need to protect Black communities of interest in the Districts with the largest percentage of Black people -  Districts 5, 6, 10, and 11.

SEE THE PRINCIPLES and MAPS HERE.

Redistricting is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to redraw San Francisco’s supervisor districts to create more fair, equitable representation in our local government. The role of the Redistricting Task Force is to rebalance supervisorial districts according to 2020 Census data. The goal is to have all 11 districts have about 79,545 residents, plus or minus 5%. Due to new housing, increased population, some districts will have to shrink and some will have to expand. There are too many people in D6, D9, and D10 and too few people in D4, D7, D1, so this impacts all of the districts. No people or geography will be moved in this process, just lines where people vote.

Black people have a lot to lose. We lost over 3,000 Black homes in the past decade and our numbers have declined barely 5%. Every year, our population shrinks, mainly due to the high cost of living. Without Black people, you can’t have Black votes or representation. Without Black representation and advocacy, you lose Black resources and funding. Without Black resources and funding, you lose jobs, businesses, homes, art/culture, media, recreation, institutions and church. In short - We lose us. This makes it really easy to ignore us and our specific needs. We need a citywide approach.

Black neighborhoods often absorb new housing development and increased population, so we always stand to lose the most in the redistricting processes, because our borders have to change based on these shifts.

SF has drawn lines to diminish Black power, movement and representation for decades - from segregation to redlining to redevelopment and exclusionary zoning and now gentrification. This makes it hard for us to have quality housing, travel, get good jobs, run for office, go to good schools, open up a business, or be creative - and thus build wealth and stay connected to each other.
