Bury The Bust!

Join us in demanding that that the Tennessee Historical Commission vote to remove the Nathan Bedford Forrest Bust from the Tennessee State Capitol. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a prominent Memphis slave trader, Confederate general, the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, and used the post-Civil War convict lease system to oblige workers to work on his plantations even after their emancipation from slavery. Since 1978 this white supremacist symbol has been displayed in our state's capitol building, funded by the Sons of Confederate Veterans and celebrated by the Klan in order to intimidate Black Tennesseeans and symbolize opposition to the victories of the Civil Rights Movement. Over the summer of 2020, hundreds of Tennesseeans protested in person for the removal of the Forrest bust, and 500 residents sent letters asking for removal of the bust to the Tennessee Historical Commission in advance of their October meeting. Now the THC is having a final hearing and vote to remove the bust on February 18-19, 2021, and it's open for public comment! Raise your voice against white supremacist policy and symbols by sending a letter to the commission today!
