Governor J.B. Pritzker proposed a budget this year that cuts healthcare for 33,000 Illinoisans, through defunding a program called Healthcare for Immigrant Adults (HBIA).

People who have health insurance through HBIA are going through treatment for cancer, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. It covers people who have no other options for health coverage. And more than that, HBIA covers our neighbors and fellow Illinoisans.

This week, we have the opportunity to submit a comment about this plan to a legislative hearing about HBIA. Fill out this form, and we’ll send the message for you. You can also edit the message with your own story.

Just keep it short: Comments have to be under 3 minutes in length when read aloud. The letter currently loaded in the form is 1 minute long.

HBIA was opened in 2022 to provide health coverage for adults ages 45-64 who are not eligible for Medicaid due to immigration status and are not yet old enough to enroll in Medicare. In Illinois, thanks to the hard work of activists and communities all over this state, all adults, regardless of immigration status, can enroll in Medicare when they turn 65. But that doesn't mean we mean to leave 33,000 people in this state behind.

If this budget proposal goes through as planned, people will die. They will be forced to rely on patchwork solutions to obtain the care they need, or go without it at all. We know people who have been told by their doctors that if this cut goes through, they will be removed from the waiting list for an organ transplant. That's not the kind of state we want to be.

We cannot afford to lose HBIA, and Illinois can afford to save it. Progressive revenue solutions can provide the funding needed to keep thousands of people in this state healthy and safe.

But to push this gubernatorial administration to do that, we need you. We need your voice, and we need you to speak up.

No podemos permitirnos perder HBIA, y Illinois sí puede permitirse salvarlo. Soluciones progresivas de ingresos pueden proporcionar la financiación necesaria para mantener a miles de personas en este estado sanas y seguras.
