A key part of fossil fuel divestment is breaking the ability of the fossil fuel industry to buy politicians to do their bidding. Although we are still waiting for the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and the California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) to eliminate the fossil fuel stocks in their portfolios, something we can move forward with right now is demanding that politicians stop taking campaign contributions from fossil fuel companies.

The fossil fuel industry is the single largest spender on lobbying in California politics and they use their money to buy politicians and defeat much needed climate policy.

The pledge commits them to not taking future campaign contributions from the oil, gas and coal industry.
