Canada must condemn Israeli violence against Palestinians

TAKE ACTION

Take a minute to send a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly urging them to condemn Israeli war crimes against Palestinians and to call on Canada to honour its obligation to ensure Israel’s compliance with international law.

BACKGROUND

Update Jan. 1, 2024:

Now more than 20,000 have been killed, and close to 2 Million displaced from their home with the genocide approaching 90 days.

South Africa has filed an application instituting proceedings against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), concerning alleged violations by Israel of its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the “Genocide Convention”) in relation to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Canada remains supportive of Israel, and not taking actions required to hold Israel accountable for its war crimes, apartheid and genocide.

October 2023

While the Canadian government has been quick to denounce the death of Israelis, it has been silent on the thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians killed.

During the decade and a half of Israel’s siege of Gaza the Israeli military has directly killed more than 6000 Palestinians.

The extremist supremacist Netanyahu government has continued to expand illegal settlements, assisted settler pogroms in the West Bank and bombed relentlessly the people and infrastructure of Gaza including the attack on Al-Maamadani hospital killing hundres. Most of those living in Gaza are descendants of Palestinians ethnically cleansed 75 years ago. Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza have faced an illegal 56-year occupation and most leading human rights organizations have concluded Israel is committing the crime of apartheid.

Canada must condemn Israeli war crimes against Palestinians and honour its obligation to ensure Israel’s compliance with international law.

Canada as a high signatory of the Fourth Geneva Convention under Article 1 must ensure that violations of the Fourth Geneva Convention do not occur under any circumstance. When Canada or other signatories fail to do so, they themselves are complicit with war crimes.

In line with international obligations, the international community must cooperate to end Israel’s illegal occupation and dismantle Israel's apartheid regime.

Immediately Canada needs to insist humanitarian access is provided to Gaza. This is critical given the intensified attacks being carried out on densely populated areas, and the strict closure and cutting off of supplies of electricity, fuel, water, food and medicine, which is threatening the survival of the more than 2 million people living in the Gaza Strip.
