CCs Deserve a Fair Contract!
Dear Parents and Community Members,
The Community Coordinators (CCs) at Brown University play a crucial role for Residential Life at our beloved University. As our supervisors say: "Community Coordinators serve as role models and leaders among peers, creating a vibrant, engaging, and respectful residential community as an essential component of students’ educational experience."
Last year the CCs formed a union, LOCC, the Labor Organization of Community Coordinators. Our union formed because we had growing concerns that ResLife doesn't adequately support CCs. We have so much to offer to improve the CC program, so we felt we need to make our voices heard! To do the job well and give the most back to their Residents, we CCs need: a compensation package that covers the cost of Room and Board; a fair and transparent rehire process that prioritizes worker retention across academic years; maintaining current policies that allow CCs to be involved in other campus activities like athletics and teaching; and a host of other policies that will tangibly improve the CC program to support CCs in mentoring their Residents.
We've been bargaining for a fair contract since February, one that empowers us as CCs to best serve our Residents. Unfortunately, the University hasn't given us the respect at the bargaining table that we deserve. They have bargained in bad faith by changing workplace policies unilaterally, while also only bargaining over surface issues, and it has been over FOUR MONTHS since we have received a new economic counter proposal from them.
So we filed Unfair Labor Practice charges with the NLRB and are holding a ULP strike. Join us on the picket line and send a letter to the University letting them know what you think!
