Support the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act

The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (Housing Credit) program has created and preserved nearly 3.5 million affordable homes nationwide, providing 8 million low-income households with homes they can afford. The Housing Credit is this country's main tool to pay for new affordable rental housing and is to preserve existing affordable rental housing.

Nationwide, there is still a shortage of 7.4 million rental homes that are affordable and available to the lowest income including people with disabilities, seniors, veterans, and families with children, so every unit will help alleviate this crisis!

The Housing Credit can help us with this crisis if we remove the barriers getting in its way. This is why we need to ask our Senators and Representatives to co-sponsor the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2021 (H.R. 2573/S. 1136), bipartisan legislation that would strengthen the Housing Credit.

The Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act (AHCIA) of 2021 could create:

  • Over 2 million affordable homes in the next decade (approximately 120,000 new units that are specifically accessible to people with mobility and/or sensory related disabilities)
  • Support the creation of nearly 3 million jobs
  • Create more than $346 billion in wages and business income and nearly $120 billion in additional tax revenue.

The AHCIA will specifically one of the hardest-hit populations by our nation's housing crisis: Americans with Disabilities. Still, only 6% of the country's housing stock is fully accessible to people with disabilities and 4 million people with disabilities living on SSI cannot afford rent in any housing market. We need more accessible and truly affordable housing. The AHCIA can help make that possible!
