Consequences of Reopening DCPS
Today we have received reports all day about sidewalks that are not close to clear, roads that are untreated, schools that have no heat and more.
Decision Makers do not get to hide in their homes and ignore the consequences of their choices. Let them know that it is not too late to make a better call tomorrow.
Ice remains. Walking to school from public transportation or even drop-offs by car involved large amounts of ice. Students were forced to walk in the streets, slipping and falling and more.
Attendance was inequitable. While schools West of the Park reported high % of attendance, those East of the River reported under 30%, sometimes drastically lower.
Some schools didn't have heat and others reporting other ice related damage. There were at least 5 schools reporting no heat in large portions of their building, adding additional stress onto an already stressful situation.
Many have said they won't go back tomorrow. After the ordeal to get to school today, and the limited staffing and programming often available, many have said they won't be returning tomorrow.
