In August of 2020 a collection of activists worked to get Robert E. Lee elementary school in Edinburg renamed. They succeeded in getting the Edinburg school board to add renaming to the agenda and the majority of the board decided to go forward with the renaming process. In September 2020, the board sidelined the process and stopped  responding to questions of continuation. The board's original timeline was to stop taking name submissions in the beginning on September 3rd, 2020 and go forward with the new name. This timeline was ultimately abandoned altogether.

It is our responsibility to let them know we have not forgotten about this. The community and the children being taught at Robert E. Lee elementary deserve better than to continue to see his name honored. His racism and the violence of his legacy do not deserve glorification.
