Cool Our Streets, Fight Urban Heat!

Extreme heat is the deadliest climate change driven weather disaster, yet every death is preventable. Heat stress is heightened in cities because of the high density of materials that trap energy from the sun and radiate heat slowly over time, elevating temperatures much higher than rural areas or natural landcover. However, cool pavements are one critical tool we can use to fight the Urban Heat Island effect and lower surface temperatures, especially in neighborhoods with few mature trees. Urge Speaker Adrienne Adams to call for a vote to implement a Cool Pavement Pilot that would prioritize installation of cool pavement technologies in neighborhoods who face the highest risk of harm from extreme heat. From there, the Department of Transportation will study outcomes from the pilot to understand how to scale up this strategy across the City.
