Cornell exposed NY’s broken law. Help fix it today!
Many failed this survivor: Cornell, the police, and the DA, and the fraternity members who knew something terrible was happening and did nothing to stop it. But above all, the law failed her.
Under current New York law, a perpetrator can get away with raping someone who is too intoxicated to consent if the victim voluntarily consumed alcohol or drugs. Because the vast majority of campus rape occurs when the victim is too intoxicated to consent, this law essentially gives campus rapists a free pass. It’s time to eliminate this outdated, victim-blaming law.
For years, advocates have fought to get rid of this barbaric law. This year, the New York State Senate passed a bill to strip this provision from the law. Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of the Assembly supports the bill, Speaker Carl Heastie refuses to bring this bill to a vote.
Please take two minutes to send Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie an email demanding that he allow a vote to close the voluntary intoxication loophole.
