COVID-19 Outbreak in SCI Greene & Laurel Highlands: Email Blast for Incarcerated Comrades!
COVID-19 is killing incarcerated comrades!
The Pennsylvania Dept. of Corrections (PA DOC) is subjecting people caged at SCI Greene and SCI Laurel Highlands to inhumane conditions during a global pandemic. PA DOC facilities like SCI Greene and SCI Laurel Highlands are experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak throughout the entire prisons because these prisons are incapable of adhering to the CDC’s guidelines to limit the transmission of the coronavirus. For months, prisoners have been forced to use the same phone and kiosks without sanitation measures taken, handcuffs are not disinfected between uses, they are only allowed to clean their cells once a week with watered down solutions, and the limited supplies issued for cleaning are never sanitized. Furthermore staff routinely mock those incarcerated at SCI Greene taunting, “Medical is a joke. You’ll die fucking with these nurses.” These kinds of comments discourage people from reporting illness to staff, who clearly cannot be entrusted with the care of incarcerated people. To date, SCI Greene has had 117 positive cases and SCI Laurel Highlands has had 488 cases. Both prisons are doing little to stop the spread. Social distancing is impossible behind bars. Rise up, fight back in solidarity with our comrades behind bars. The demands are as follows:
The PA Department of Health must investigate the conditions at SCI Greene and SCI Laurel Highlands to ensure that PA DOC is adhering to CDC Guidelines to decrease the spread of COVID in all of its facilities.
The PA Department of Corrections provide free access to sanitation products
Provide doctor’s visits upon first request, including free testing for COVID19
Given the PA DOC’s inability to keep prisoners safe in a global pandemic, it must decrease the prison population by issuing releases, especially freeing those who are more vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus. PA DOC claims it is reducing the population but it is not enough to have a release rate of one person per week.
