Tell Congress: Oppose Federal Private School Voucher Program
For decades, Georgia’s elected leaders have underinvested in the state’s public schools while expanding school voucher programs. Between 2008 and 2022, voucher programs diverted $1.3 billion to private schools. Now, a proposal in Congress threatens to expand voucher programs further.
Private schools that receive vouchers lack many accountability measures and requirements to which public schools are subject, such as full accreditation and bachelor's degree requirements for teachers and adequate background checks for staff. Further, those who attend private schools forego their rights to federal protections and services for students with disabilities.
Instead of funding a separate and discriminatory private education system, Congress should focus on funding priorities that meet all students’ needs.
Tell Congress to reject “Qualified Elementary and Secondary Education Scholarships” as part of the budget reconciliation package.
