Defend Professors - Email Your Legislators Today!
Adjunct faculty are professors who are paid by the class and lack decent pay, stability and benefits such as healthcare. Adjunct faculty's dismal conditions don't just hurt them and their families: they also hurt student learning outcomes.
We need to pass protections for these workers including basic healthcare and retirement benefits, as well as better job security. The Senate budget amendment #685 is a first step. Please help us by sending a personalized letter to your Senators urging them to pass this measure.
Two thirds of adjuncts earn less than $50,000 per year with all other jobs combined, while 25 percent of adjuncts earn less than $25,000 per year. According to one survey, two thirds of part-time adjunct professors received no retirement plans or health insurance.
A 2023 study of Massachusetts community colleges found a strong relationship between students' low graduation rates and the poor treatment of adjunct faculty. For students to get the best education possible, they need professors with the best treatment possible.
Want to help us end the abuse of adjunct faculty and make MA colleges work better for everyone? Then send our pre-written letter to Massachusetts lawmakers and urge them to support the budget amendment! This amendment establishes a pilot program to provide access to full time positions, and sets up a commission to determine the process of providing healthcare and retirement benefits for adjuncts.
This is an achievable goal that can push forward the fight for equity in the state.
