Demand a Displacement Moratorium at Glendale Townhomes
Demand a Displacement Moratorium at Glendale Townhomes!
Defend Glendale and Public Housing Coalition, Glendale residents, and community members are calling for a complete moratorium on displacing residents until construction begins.
In December 2025, Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) announced plans to redevelop Glendale Townhomes, the oldest remaining public housing in the City of Minneapolis. Now, MPHA has selected a complete demolition plan and says that staff will begin coordinating resident relocations in July 2026.
MPHA made these decisions without a Glendale Resident Council, the democratic body meant to represent residents, and without resident consent and approval. Residents overwhelmingly supported a minimal rehabilitation option, voiced over the last year through community meetings and comments, but MPHA chose demolition instead.
Now, MPHA wants all Glendale residents to leave their homes and start the relocation process in the next few weeks. This is despite the fact that MPHA has NO SECURED FUNDING for this demolition and development project. MPHA hasn't even submitted a complete application to the Department of Housing and Urban Development for this project. So why should residents be displaced from their homes? MPHA has stated that NO NEW RESIDENTS will be moved into Glendale Townhomes in anticipation of demolition. So why should families be forced to leave their homes if there is no funding or new tenants?
Additionally, MPHA is seeking to relocate 20 households under a specific policy titled Family Housing Designation, which states that only households with the correct number of dependents are qualified to live in Glendale, which is designated under the policy. MPHA claims these families' homes are under-occupied or underutilized and are needed for families on the waitlist. But MPHA has also said no new residents will be moving into Glendale. So why do these residents need to move?
We are asking for a complete stop to resident displacements and relocations until construction begins. Residents shouldn't pay the price for MPHA's development ambitions.
Please sign our letter campaign and send it to MPHA’s Board of Commissioners and the Minneapolis City Council.
