Demand City Council Limit Collaboration with ICE!

After a year of massive public pressure, three Houston City Council Members have finally put forward an ordinance to limit Houston Police Department's collaboration with ICE. Even with a Democratic-majority on this City Council, we know it is not a guaranteed victory. Send a letter to demand your Council Members defend hundreds of thousands of our immigrant neighbors!

Although there is much more work to defend our immigrant communities, the ordinance addresses major failures under Mayor Whitmire. The ordinance would 1) remove the requirement for HPD officers to call ICE at traffic stops on the basis of an administrative warrant alone, 2) disallow HPD officers from prolonging a traffic stop to aid ICE, and 3) require reports to City Council on instances of HPD contacting ICE.

The Houston Chronicle reported that HPD officers have contacted ICE more than 100 times in 2025, a dramatic increase from previous years. In at least two cases, officers transported people directly to ICE custody after routine traffic stops. In response to the reporting, Whitmire and Chief Diaz issued new orders that HPD officers must wait 30 minutes to allow ICE to take our neighbors.

All of this while Whitmire assured Houston that we were only abiding by state law. These practices go beyond what state law requires. More importantly, they enable fascist attacks on our communities. There are no excuses left for the Mayor and City Council. End collaboration now!
