Demand insurance commissioners stop hiding insurance industry data from the public

Climate disasters are intensifying and happening more often, and insurance companies are raising rates, canceling coverage, denying claims, and making obscene record profits.

In fact, property insurers recently had their most profitable year in history — not exactly the mark of an industry that’s struggling to grapple with the climate crisis, as they would have us believe. There’s way more to the story.

The reality is insurance companies are almost certainly using climate disasters to extract more profit from their customers.

From now until June, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is collecting insurance information data from across the country about premiums, nonrenewal rates, claims, and more.

This is good, and it needs to happen. The problem is that then state insurance commissioners get pressured by the industry to keep this vital information hidden from the public.

Increasingly frequent and intense extreme weather is wrecking homes and communities and we’re seeing insurance companies taking advantage of people with skyrocketing home insurance premiums, and policy nonrenewals and cancellations, even where folks have been paying their insurance bill every month for years – or decades.

The insurance industry is shifting the costs of the climate crisis to consumers and families, and is unprepared despite knowing about climate change for decades. Without public intervention to force the industry to answer for their recklessness, the household and community-level impacts could trigger a financial crisis — with rising insurance costs and foreclosures undermining local tax bases, regional financial institutions, and the mortgage market.

This data is too important to hide. State insurance commissioners are supposed to be the public line of accountability over the insurance industry. We need them to resist the industry’s pressure to keep us in the dark.
