OUR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IS NOT TREATING VICTIMS EQUALLY.
The UK criminal justice system is meant to serve all victims. Not just those who can afford it.
Victims are getting charged hundreds and thousands of pounds for court transcripts to get information about their case, leaving too many victims in the dark, with no hope of closure. Meanwhile, 92% of cases, all those that are seen in a Magistrates Court aren’t recorded or transcribed at all, leaving victims no access to information on the cases they’re encouraged not to attend.
We believe every victim deserves the same fair and equal access to open justice. Which is why we are working with Jess Brown-Fuller MP, who has submitted an Early Day Motion laying out the changes we still need
Sentencing remarks should be made available upon request for hearings in the Magistrates' courts, at no cost
Judges summing up transcripts and/or audio recordings of hearings in the Crown Court and Magistrate Court should be provided to victims upon request, at no cost
Crown Court and Magistrate Court sentencing remarks and judges summing up should ultimately be published in the interest of open justice
