Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has done the unthinkable by gutting America’s ability to defend itself from future pandemics. He fired the CDC’s top vaccine advisors. He canceled the HIV vaccine. He killed funding for the Bird Flu vaccine even as outbreaks continue to spread.

The next pandemic could be around the corner, and RFK Jr. apparently doesn’t care if America is defenseless.

These were political decisions. RFK Jr. installed loyalists, not scientists. He ignored proven mRNA technology. He catered to conspiracy theorists instead of following public health guidance. And he lied to the Senate during his confirmation process to cover up, not just his opinions, but his future plans.

Vaccine development is not optional. It’s the only way to prevent another COVID-level catastrophe. The HIV vaccine program was years in the making and would have saved millions globally. Bird Flu is already spreading among livestock. The risk is real -- and it’s rising.

These reckless decisions will hurt the most vulnerable first. Frontline workers, poor neighborhoods, children and seniors who rely on public health infrastructure will bear the brunt. The same communities hit hardest by COVID will be abandoned again.

But there’s still time to stop this. Immediately after becoming Secretary, RFK Jr. tried to undermine promotion of the measles vaccine… even after 3 children in Texas had died. Right away, RFK felt massive public pressure to change course.

In an about face, he went from pushing a wackadoodle idea that people just need to take more vitamin A and saying that healthy kids won’t die anyway to fully supporting the vaccine and requiring the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide MMR vaccines to clinics and pharmacies across several states.

It was a huge victory and proof that when it comes to public health, public pressure is having an impact. That’s why we must act and not give up until we win.
