On the evening of March 25, 2025, Rumeysa Ozturk, a doctoral student at Tufts University, was detained by plainclothes, masked federal agents while she was on her way to break her Ramadan fast. Ozturk, who is Turkish, was residing in the U.S. on a valid F-1 student visa.
Like a growing number of other international students activists, Ozturk been targeted by the Department of Homeland Security for constitutionally-protected speech. Her role in co-authoring an opinion editorial in the Tufts student newspaper, which called for the university to acknowledge Israel’s campaign of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, made her the target of the doxxing website Canary Mission, which has also been responsible for the harassment and intimidation of multiple other student activists.
Ozturk's detention without charges, as well as her relocation to a facility more than 1,600 miles away from her lawyer, is a blatant violation of her right to due process, a right that all people in the United States—citizens as well as non-citizens, undocumented immigrants as well as those with legal status—are entitled to. Add your name to demand Rumeysa Ozturk's immediate release from DHS detention and to make it known that disappearing student activists is unacceptable in the United States.
