Don’t exempt Cranberry Point from our zoning laws!

The Cranberry Point Energy Storage facility is a proposed 150 megawatt lithium-ion battery storage facility planned for a residential neighborhood in Carver, Massachusetts. If built, this facility developed by Texas-based developer Cranberry Point would be located at 31R Main Street. It would threaten our health, safety, community character, welfare and water. Lithium-ion batteries can catch fire and generate toxic fumes and runoff. These types of fires are generally difficult for fire departments to control.

Cranberry Point would be placed within 400 feet of our homes and within a ¼ mile of schools, low income housing and the center of town.

The sole source aquifer that provides drinking water for Carver and surrounding communities is already threatened and contaminated and Cranberry Point presents another big contamination risk!

On May 11, 2022, Cranberry Point filed a legal petition with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities asking for an exemption from Carver's Zoning Bylaws. The people of Carver have the right to the protection of town zoning laws. These were passed under the right to self-governance, home rule power and zoning power under the state Constitution. We should have the right to use our own zoning laws to decide how best to protect our health, safety and welfare.

Carver is already overburdened with industrial renewable energy projects: 19 large ground mounted solar projects on over 400 acres with dozens of lithium ion battery storage systems. Many are sited in wetlands. Some are mounted on arsenic-treated wood poles. These already threaten our water. We want to use our zoning laws, our local control, to protect our water.

Please do not let Cranberry Point evade Carver's zoning laws!
