Ensure Transit Access to Kenton County School District's New Central Office

Kenton County School Administration is moving to a new central office building at the end of December 2025, but the location is completely inaccessible to people without cars. This excludes:

  • 21% of households below 200% poverty level (35% among people of color)
  • 7% of all county households who don't have access to a vehicle
  • Parents, students, and community members who rely on public transit
  • Potential employees - the district runs "Walk-in Wednesdays" for hiring, but now requires a car to apply for a job

Current Barriers:

  • No sidewalks connecting the building to neighborhoods or businesses
  • Dangerous conditions on KY-17 with 55+ mph traffic and shoulders only
  • One of the highest injury/death rates in the county at KY-17/I-275 interchange
  • No TANK bus stop at the new location
  • Inadequate service - nearest stop at Lake Park has only 2 morning buses (7:10am, 7:43am)
  • Employment discrimination - qualified candidates without cars can't even apply for school district jobs

Planning Commission Already Flagged This Issue:

  • January 2024: Kenton County Planning Commission explicitly recommended sidewalks along Madison Pike for TANK access
  • District's Response: Only planned sidewalks to Tuscany (which connects to nothing) for "staff wellness walks"
  • Ignored Recommendation: The district proceeded without addressing the public transit recommendation

Our Ask:

The School Board must formally commit to partnering with TANK and KYTC to ensure transit accessibility within 90 days, with a public timeline for implementation.

UPDATE - November 25, 2025: District Response Misses the Point

The Kenton County School District responded to our concerns, but they completely miss the point. We need scheduled TANK bus service, not empty promises.

What the District Said:

  • TANK buses are "welcome to enter our grounds"
  • They're working on a sidewalk to Tuscany

The Problem: Saying buses are "welcome" is meaningless without actual routes and schedules. The nearest TANK stop remains at Lake Park with only two morning buses (7:10am and 7:43am) and no sidewalk access. That's it.

What We Still Need:

  • Scheduled TANK routes with frequent runs
  • Formal partnership with TANK to establish real service
  • Access for everyone including job seekers at Walk-in Wednesdays
  • 90-day commitment with concrete timeline

Permission to enter a parking lot is not public transit. Keep pushing for REAL transit access!
