Across Washington State, public school districts are facing worsening budget crises -- and that was before the federal government began slashing education spending.
A growing number of school districts have already cut programs, laid off teachers, packed students into classrooms with more than 40 students to a teacher, and even closed schools. Several districts are under fiscal monitoring by the state. These cuts are only going to get worse — unless Governor Bob Ferguson acts to fully fund our schools as the state constitution requires.
Our kids already struggled through a pandemic, and many are still catching up. Our state is deliberately and knowingly underfunding public education. State spending per pupil has actually gone down in recent years, when adjusted for inflation.
Governor Ferguson needs to commit to adding the funding that our students are owed under the state constitution. And given the state's budget deficit, he needs to get it by raising revenues on the state's wealthiest residents and biggest corporations. Polling shows the public strongly supports this, so we're not asking him to do anything difficult.
This is a make-or-break moment for our public schools. We need to demand that Governor Ferguson make saving our public schools his number one priority.
Will you take a moment and write to Governor Ferguson and urge him to step up and commit to amply funding our public schools, as the state constitution requires, with new revenues to prevent awful budget cuts?
