On Tuesday March 9th, 2021, we the workers at the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits announced to our colleagues and management that we are forming a union with the Minnesota Newspaper and Communicagions Guild (TNG-CWA Local 37002) and sought voluntary recognition from our Executive Director, Jon Pratt.

Even though Jon Pratt has the power to do so, he is requiring MCN Union to give a presentation to the board to 'inform management options'. We are eager to speak to board members and share why we have formed a union, however, delaying recognition is unneccessary and disregards the overwhelming majority of the workers who already decided we in fact want a union.  

MCN Union believes more can be done to improve our working conditions, especially around issues concerning racial justice in the nonprofit sector. We are organizing a union to implement a model of collective decision making, ensure the value of each worker’s time and labor is respected and justly compensated, and invest in employee professional growth and satisfaction.

We view this delay as an ever common anti-union tactic to prevent us from exercising our full rights to have a union and neogtiate collectively over our working conditions. It is a failure to live up to the organizations own commitment to equity and inclusion.
