Earlier this year, the Fort Myers City Council voted on signing the 287(g) ICE agreement which allows police officers to act as ICE agents and detain our immigrant friends and family members. The vote failed in a 3-3 decision. After the vote, the Florida Attorney General, James Uthmeier, made legal threats to remove our elected council members from the council. Later, on March 21, 2025, the Fort Myers City Council then unanimously approved the 287(g) agreement with ICE.

But this is not how our democracy operates. We the people elect our representatives, and those representatives should not be coerced to vote one way over another.
