In September 2018, Dr. Gulshan Abbas, a retired medical doctor, was detained without any legal basis or transparent due process. The detention of Dr. Gulshan Abbas is seen as a retaliatory measure against her sister, Campaign for Uyghurs Executive Director Rushan Abbas, and her brother, Dr. Rishat Abbas, President of the Uyghur Academy – International, due to their tireless advocacy for the rights of the Uyghur community.

In 2020, it was learned that Dr. Gulshan Abbas was sentenced to 20 years in prison on fabricated charges.

The arbitrary detention of Dr. Abbas is a stark example of transnational repression against American citizens by holding their loved ones hostage.
