Tell Westchester BOL: Fund Zero Waste in 2026!

It’s been TWO YEARS since the Board of Legislators passed the budget ear-marking $90,000 for a waste reduction study and we are still awaiting the results.

We cannot wait another year to fund Zero Waste solutions in the County Budget.

Let’s make sure the Board of Legislators and County Executive Ken Jenkins know that we have not forgotten and want action! The county has wasted another year- and in that year more Peekskill children have gotten asthma, more elders have suffered cardiovascular problems, and our climate has continued to warm. This is a public health and climate emergency, we need ACTION!

This incinerator is one of the oldest in the nation. It is fiscally irresponsible to not plan ahead for its failure or closure.

Why This Matters:

  • Peekskill is an environmental justice community: The census tract with the incinerator has a higher environmental pollution burden than 98% of census tracts in NY state!

  • Wheelabrator is a 41-year-old facility and the largest industrial air polluter in Westchester County.

  • It is morally and fiscally responsible to move away from incineration, which harms people, the planet, and our finances.

  • The Title V Air Permit, formerly held by Westchester County Industrial Development Agency, expired in 2021 and still has not been renewed.

  • We cannot make progress without a clear goal. Our goal must be to close Wheelabrator and transition to Zero Waste.

  • We demand that Peekskill and Yonkers—particularly Peekskill, which has suffered from decades of pollution—have a seat at the table during the creation and implementation of a new waste management plan.
