GMCB Chair Owen Foster: Keep the Copley Hospital Birthing Center Open

This summer, Copley Hospital administrators announced plans to close the Copley Birthing Center on November 1st 2025, despite a growing chorus of community members, legislators, and healthcare workers warning that this would represent an unacceptable risk to families in the region.

Call on Green Mountain Care Board Chair Owen Foster to use his authority to keep the Copley Hospital Birthing Center open.

Background: In the words of the Save Copley Birthing Center coalition:

  • Eliminating the Birth Center is a betrayal of Copley’s mission to promote the wellness of our community.
  • Without the Birth Center patients will have to travel to Barre, Burlington, Newport or Saint Johnsbury for care.
  • Increases in cost, time, and money for prenatal care, a barrier that can lead to more birth complications.
  • The lack of access to high quality and consistent care increases maternal and neonatal mortality.
  • Numerous Vermonters struggle with transportation issues and cannot access care outside of their community.
  • Copley needs to resist the moral bankruptcy of cutting needed services and putting the health of women and babies in jeopardy as a short-sighted means to reduce costs.
  • The obstetricians, midwives, nurses and all of the staff of the Birth Center are known throughout the community as proven professionals who do an exceptional job at bringing new lives into Lamoille County. It would be a huge loss to lose the team and what has become known as the Copley Birth Experience.
  • Closure of the Birthing Center will place an additional burden on other areas of the hospital, like surgical services, the Emergency Department, and Women’s Centers.
