Dear Gov. DeWine: Demand GOP Lawmakers Do Their Job, Pass a State Budget

The Republican-dominated Ohio legislature violated our state constitution when they failed to pass a 2-year budget plan by the June 30 deadline. Instead, a 17-day emergency spending plan is being instituted so that these lawmakers can put off the process even further.

Ohio lawmakers haven't missed a budget deadline since 2009. Before that, it hasn't happened since 1991. In both previous instances, the state was experiencing deep recessions and two-party control of the Statehouse.

This current scenario is completely unprecedented given that Republicans control all three branches of Ohio's government and have a $2 billion surplus to work with.

Ohio taxpayers spend more than $130,000 every working day to keep both chambers of the legislature operating. Instead, the Majority's leadership has decided to suspend the Ohio constitution and give lawmakers a two-week paid vacation. For most Ohioans, missing a work deadline has consequences.

It is time to hold the legislative Majority accountable for their lack of leadership. Take a moment to write a letter and tell Gov. Mike DeWine to do his job and call lawmakers back to the Statehouse until Republicans can make a deal to pass our state's two-year budget.
