On January 14th, The Manitoba government released its plan to end chronic homelessness by moving people out of encampments and into housing with supports. The plan fails to address one very large problem that will be critical to its success - the lack of non-market housing supply.

Join us in urging the Manitoba government to revisit its plan and include a commitment to expand the social housing supply. We will send a letter on your behalf to the Premier, the Premier’s Senior Advisor on Ending Chronic Homelessness, and the Minister responsible for housing.

Manitoba needs to create at least 10,000 new social housing units to address and prevent homelessness. Right to Housing called on the newly elected Manitoba government to meet that need with a long-term commitment to add 1,000 units annually for 10 years beginning in Budget 2024. The budget included a commitment to add 350 new social units, and that appears to be all we’re going to get. The plan to end homelessness includes no new targets for expanding the social housing supply.

We must continue to call on the Manitoba government to adequately meet the housing needs of all low-income people experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness by investing in the expansion and protection of social housing with supports.
