You may have heard that the historically strong El Niño in the eastern central Pacific is a major threat to public safety: It will lead to significantly more global flooding, fires, storms, droughts, deadly heatwaves, dangerous turbulence and most concerning, a significant threat to food supply chains, crops, and power grids. (The previous strongest recorded El Niño in 1877 lead to 40 million deaths worldwide from famine. And this coming El Niño event looks to be even stronger.)
But what you probably haven’t heard is any talk from elected officials and major news media about preparation for the increase in extreme weather risk that will accompany this bump in global temperature.
The silence is pretty insane. But it’s also very, very dangerous.
