Help Prevent Child Lead Poisoning

Urge your State Senator and Representative to take action to prevent child lead poisoning.

Every day, on average, at least one child in Rhode Island is lead poisoned. Despite lead paint being nationally banned for residential use in 1978, Rhode Island children continue to suffer the avoidable consequences of lead poisoning, largely due to exposure to lead-based paint in older homes. In Rhode Island, nearly three out of four homes were built before lead paint was banned.

Just this week, Attorney General Peter Neronha was forced to take legal action against a noncompliant landlord, after numerous complaints from tenants about the conditions of the properties. The AG’s Office should not need to intervene with a lawsuit to ensure RI children are safe in their homes from the threat of lead poisoning. The proposed legislation will help ensure compliance with existing lead hazard mitigation laws and make our children, homes and communities healthier and safer.

Lead poisoning is preventable. Join us in calling on lawmakers to address child lead poisoning and promote healthy housing by supporting the package of bills aimed at expanding protections under the existing Lead Hazard Mitigation Act.
