To Monongahela National Forest Service Assistant Supervisor Sarah LaPlante:
In April of this year, more than 250 people sent messages to the Forest Service,
asking for emergency action to stabilize and repair a major landslide on the
Blackwater Canyon Rail Trail.
But there has been zero action taken on the ground.
This inaction is unacceptable. The Forest Service needs to take immediate action to
stabilize and repair the massive, dangerous landslide on the Big Run Culvert that
the Trail passes over. The intricate cut-stone culvert, built by community ancestors,
is at risk. The Trail is a key link in a regional trail network that serves tens of
thousands of recreational hikers and bikers.
Your strong commitment to the stewardship of the Monongahela National Forest,
one of West Virginia’s greatest natural resources, is much appreciated.
Now that the entire Blackwater Canyon Rail Trail is part of the Mon Forest, the
public is looking forward to a future of greater recreational opportunities. Both
future opportunities and current activities will be severely damaged if the Culvert
landslide is not addressed now.
Further delay is unacceptable. Please see that work begins immediately to prevent
the Culvert’s further erosion and collapse. Concerned citizens are watching.
Best wishes,
