Send a Letter: Protect Connecticut Families and Our Democracy
Connecticut must not be complicit in the federal government's abusive immigration enforcement tactics or its creeping authoritarianism.
The last few weeks in Connecticut have confirmed what we already knew. Connecticut is not immune to ICE’s violence. In one week at the end of August, ICE abducted 100 of our neighbors. In one single week, over 100 families were broken.
Armed ICE agents are terrorizing our communities — abducting parents in front of their children, targeting workers, tearing students from their futures, they are beating up, pepper spraying, and tasing our neighbhors, they are breaking windows and unlawfully entering courthouses. These actions violate the dignity, safety, and basic rights of our neighbors. This is not justice — it’s a campaign of fear, and it has no place in our state.
We call on Connecticut’s elected officials — from the governor to mayors to the General Assembly — to take every possible action to protect our communities and resist federal overreach. We need to make clear that WE ARE NOT OK with the authoritarian takeover of any Connecticut city. We're calling on our state leaders to act now:
- Governor Lamont: Fund legal defense and family stability: Create a $10 million emergency fund for legal defense and family stability. This fund should ensure that people fighting deportation can access legal representation and that families facing the detention of a loved one can get immediate financial assistance for basic needs like food, housing, childcare, and transportation. No one should have to fight deportation without a lawyer. No family should have to choose between paying for legal representation and keeping a roof over their heads.
- Attorney General Tong: Create a portal through the Attorney General's office to collect reports of excessive use of force and discrimination by ICE agents and federal law enforcement, and file lawsuits against the federal government.
- To all State Leaders: Ensure our laws are enforced. Open an investigation into TRUST Act compliance and create an independent body with real authority to audit and enforce our laws, and close the records loophole ICE is using.
We keep us safe. While we demand our elected representatives take real steps to defend our communities, we know that the most immediate and effective way to really push back against the Administration’s attacks is through mass mobilizing and grassroots community organizing. Hands off CT is committed to building independent and democratic community defense networks in every city, town, and neighborhood in our state.
We say NO to mass deportations. NO to militarized raids. NO to fear. YES to dignity, safety, and sanctuary. Connecticut must be a safe and welcoming place for all of us, regardless of immigration status.ADD YOUR NAME to demand bold, courageous action from Connecticut. We cannot stand by while our neighbors are targeted and our community is threatened.
