During Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s confirmation hearings for Health and Human Services Secretary, he told senators again and again that his controversial 2019 trip to Samoa had “nothing to do with vaccines.” Now, the Guardian and the Associated Press have exposed he was lying.

The truth is before traveling to Samoa, Kennedy personally wrote to the country’s prime minister proposing an assessment of its MMR vaccines. In fact, the letter mentioned vaccines or vaccination 8 times.

Samoa’s prime minister responded by welcoming Kennedy’s visit and his proposed assessment. Another member of Kennedy’s organization described the upcoming visit as vaccine-related too, providing even more confirmation of the trip’s real intentions. Once there, RFK questioned the effectiveness of the vaccine and even met with anti-vaccine activists.

After his trip, Samoa suffered a catastrophic measles outbreak that killed 83 people, including 72 children under the age of 5 – a result directly related to dangerously low vaccination rates. RFK could’ve promoted life-saving vaccines while he was there, instead he continued to spread anti-vax disinformation.

The danger has followed RFK into office and the consequences of vaccine misinformation are hitting families here at home too.

The CDC has recorded 2,777 measles cases nationwide this year alone, the highest annual total reported in more than 35 years.

Last year, people died of measles during outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico. Now, Pennsylvania has announced two more measles-related deaths. Instead of responding to the tragedy with increased access to and promotion of the proven and effective vaccine, RFK Jr. attacked Gov. Josh Shapiro, saying Pennsylvania officials made it up.

He implied the deaths were just wish fulfillment “fabricated by one of the Governor's hopeful staffers.”

Kennedy lied to Congress to get confirmed and has failed to educate and protect public health, and now people across the country are paying the price with their lives. RFK Jr. is a danger to the health and safety of the American people. Congress must use its constitutional authority to hold him accountable.
