Just Say No to Storing Fossil Fuels in Underground Caverns!
New Jersey wants to store what, where? Yes, NJDEP wants to allow polluting liquefied petroleum gas storage in underground caverns in communities across the state.
Please submit a comment to NJDEP by this Friday, July 15! Tell them that the risks are too great for New Jersey to permit cavern storage of fotssil fuels. The rulemaking should prohibit underground cavern storage of all liquefied petroleum gasses and their derivatives. DEP proposes to ban cavern storage of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which is the correct decision, requiring our support. But they must take the next step and prohibit ALL petroleum gasses and their derivatives from being stored beneath our feet!
The six caverns that do exist in the state are located right up against environmentally overburdened communities (in Union and Gloucester Counties) and the rules do not address environmental justice impacts, which is inexcusable. The caverns will emit methane and flares will release greenhouse gasses (GHG) and toxic co-pollutants, making people sick and fueling the climate crisis. We can’t invite more deadly air pollution when the science demands we must reduce GHG’s by 50% by 2030 and secure environmental justice. Liquefied petroleum gasses can also cause disastrous explosions and unquenchable fire. There is NO SAFE LOCATION and NO BENEFIT to the public!
