Write CA State Parks to urge them to reject the draft General Plan Amendment that would allow McCourt’s gondola at LA State Historic Park.

California State Parks has released a deeply flawed draft General Plan Amendment (GPA) for LA State Historic Park that would officially add Frank McCourt's LA ART gondola to the park’s general plan. The draft GPA is available for review at https://lastatehistoricparkgpa.com/.

California State Parks is accepting public comments on the draft GPA through July 22, 2026 and it’s crucial that they hear from all of us on the importance of protecting LA State Historic Park from this illegal gondola development.

Please take a moment right now to send your own public comment letter. You can use any of the talking points we’ve provided, but make it personal, too. Why does the park matter to you? How would the gondola change your experience of the park?

The gondola project does not serve the mission of the park, but rather, it conflicts with key goals in the general plan. The gondola would uproot 81 trees at LA State Historic Park, build a massive 98-foot-tall station at the park’s southern entrance, fly cabins as low as 26 feet above very popular, heavily used greenspace, and add corporate naming rights signage and advertising on the stations and cabins. The gondola would completely change the character and use of this community resource and also be incredibly invasive to the surrounding historic neighborhoods of Olvera Street, Chinatown, and Elysian Park.

Please share this action and encourage your friends to submit comments. We are asking supporters of LA State Historic Park and all those who care about environmental justice to submit comments on the Draft GPA and copy the California State Park and Recreation Commission, which will ultimately decide on the amendment to the park’s general plan later this year. Urge them to REJECT THE DRAFT GPA. Park land and airspace are not to be carved up and given away to developers for other uses. California State Parks would set a terrible precedent for all of the state parks they oversee by approving this GPA.

PLEASE SEND YOUR PUBLIC COMMENT NOW!
