LD 199: Health care for all *means all*!
Help us send a strong message for health care to state leaders! Send your legislators an e-postcard now!
Many immigrants in Maine can’t get access to MaineCare. For many, the only coverage they can currently access is emergency MaineCare, which is extremely limited in what it covers for care. Because of this discriminatory policy, many of our family, friends, and neighbors who are immigrants in Maine go without life-saving medication, screenings, and treatments.
While insurance companies reap large profits, immigrants who live and work in Maine communities continue to struggle with the high cost of health care. Without insurance, people without health care often have to make a life or death choice to delay care until the ER is the only option.
We need your help to stop health care rollbacks!
There are legislators who want to limit people’s access to health care and their chance at a full and healthy life. Our bill, LD 199 is a step forward, affirming people’s right to see a doctor or fill a prescription when they need it. We need people of all backgrounds to send a strong message to the legislature: we're in this together, health care for all means all. Sending your legislator a message is vitally important to the campaign for health care for all, and for our collective future!
LD 199 means healthier people and a stronger economy!
Our family, friends, and neighbors who are immigrants are essential to our future and are the backbone of some of Maine’s most important industries including seafood, agriculture, hospitality, and essential services like child care, home care, health care, and sanitation. Immigrants pay taxes that fund our schools, roads, and community services we all rely on. We need a health care system that works for everyone for a stronger and healthier future.
Building on progress from previous campaigns
In 2021, we worked to pass a bill similar to LD 199. Legislators heard stories from people without health care, health care providers, school staff, faith leaders, social workers, and many others describing the many ways our family, friends, and neighbors who are immigrants struggle without health care. Ultimately, part of the bill passed and was signed into law, expanding access to for people under 21 and pregnant people, regardless of their immigration status. Despite this significant win, many in our community are still left out. That's why we need LD 199!
