Ask the Supervisors to pass limits on “campgrounds"
The Burnett County Land Use & Information Committee has unanimously approved Text Amendment #TXT-21-3, draft changes to County law for reducing conflicts over so-called "campgrounds" in Burnett County.
The proposed changes do not go as far as we hoped, but are a big step forward.
The new rules would:
- Prohibit new campgrounds in ALL residential areas (RR-1, RR-2, and RR-3)
- Limit campgrounds in agricultural areas (A-2) to no more than 25 units as an accessory to some other use (e.g. a small campground at a winery)
- Limit campgrounds in forestry areas (F-1) to no more than 25 units
- Require all campgrounds in agricultural and forestry areas to be temporary overnight camping (e.g. no park model cabins)
- Create a new commercial zoning district (RR-RC) where seasonal campgrounds with up to 100 units are allowed, subject to Town and County approval
- Create a uniform standard and level playing field for all campgrounds on the size of decks, patios and sheds that are allowed
The next step in the process is for the full county board to take up the text amendment. Approval at this point is not guaranteed - big "campgrounds" are BIG MONEY for developers and operators.
Please personalize our sample letter and send it by 4 PM Wednesday, October 20th, the day before the next County Board meeting.
When you use the Preserve Burnett County website to submit your letter electronically, it will be automatically delivered by email to 20 County Supervisors and Land Services Director Jason Towne (we are not including supervisors we expect to recuse themselves due to a conflict of interest).
