Challenge an Unconstitutional ICE Surge in Maine
Maine's Attorney General Aaron Frey and his Deputy Chris Taub have a unique position to weigh in on the plans to escalate ICE enforcement activity. Specifically, our Attorney General can join the states who have AG's filing lawsuits against the nationwide ICE surge.
The Tenth Amendment gives the State of Maine and its cities, "inviolable sovereign authority" to protect the health and wellbeing of all those who reside, work, or visit within their borders.
Tell the AG and our state legislators: Don't wait until more families are separated or another bystander is killed. Challenge the federal administrations planned ICE surge now.
A first step could be filing an amicus brief on the lawsuits of other states. Learn about the lawsuits filed in Minnesota and Illinois here.
BACKGROUND
Like others states, Maine has already seen a significant increase in ICE activity over the past year. Now we are being told to expect a surge in ICE presence, using the $75 billion in public dollars approved for immigration enforcement.
All available data points to the ICE surges being about political goals rather than public safety. Across the country, reports show an average of only 5% of people detained by ICE have violent convictions, where 73% show no criminal convictions related to their cases. (Here in Maine, according to data we've analyzed, about 80% cases over the past year involve no criminal convictions.)
