Tell The State: Michiganders Deserve More Options For Homes We Can Afford!

Michigan is currently facing a severe shortage of 119,000 homes, in part because overly restrictive laws are stalling the construction of affordable starter homes and driving up costs. Recent polling by YouGov shows that 82% of voters agree that the state must take bold action to restore affordability, unlock housing choice, and promote more vibrant local economies.

Will you take action now and tell the state to address the housing shortage?

A bipartisan coalition of Michigan legislators introduced the Michigan Housing Readiness Package. This package of bills (HBs 5529-5532 and 5581-5585) encompasses a wide range of tested policy interventions to cut housing costs and ease the crisis for Michiganders by:

  • Allowing smaller homes on smaller lots so that more homes can be built in existing neighborhoods, near jobs, and closer to amenities.

  • Streamlining administrative processes to create predictability, reduce delays, and lower costs for builders.

  • Creating guardrails in decision-making to prevent a small minority of residents from vetoing projects that benefit the community.

  • Allowing duplexes, Accessory Dwelling Units, and limiting burdensome parking mandates to provide affordable housing choices for Michiganders

Crucially, there is already strong bipartisan support for these solutions. According to YouGov, nearly all of these policies enjoy a 2-to-1 support from Michiganders. Taken together, these proposals will allow desperately needed homes to be built and prevent more Michiganders from being priced out of their communities.

Now we need you to contact your legislator and tell them that you support the Michigan Housing Readiness Package. We need to ensure that Michigan is affordable for the next generation of families, workers and leaders, and we want to make sure legislators hear from Michiganders loud and clear: we need to build more housing!
