May Day Civic Holiday Email

Public education in the United States is under coordinated national attack, driven by right-wing politicians, billionaire donors, and corporate interests seeking to dismantle public schools through privatization, and the erosion of civil and labor rights. These attacks are part of a broader assault on democracy itself — so we’re taking to the streets on May Day 2026 to defend our colleges, our communities, and our future.

We’re calling on Mayor Brandon Johnson, Chancellor Juan Salgado, and the City Colleges Board of Trustees to declare May 1, 2026 a Day of Civic Action. Public education is worth defending, students and educators deserve safety and dignity, and that civic participation is essential to a functioning democracy.

Add your name and send the message. It takes less than a minute, but it sends a powerful signal: Chicago educators, students, and community members are organized, paying attention, and ready to act.
