This is the deadliest year on record for people in ICE custody, and the full story is being kept from you by some of the most respected medical institutions in the country.

Recent events show the body count is continuing to rack up inside ICE detention while America's medical associations and state licensing boards stay silent:

• Carlos Josué Marchena-Marchena, a 36-year-old father of four, died September 18 at a contractor-run Louisiana facility after his family says staff skipped the insulin shots and meals his type 1 diabetes required.  

We only know about Carlos because ICE is required by law to report deaths in custody.

• Wilber Garces Perez was shot in the back by ICE agents in Texas. Perez was pulled from his car, handcuffed and left bleeding. Just 4 hours after having been finally taken to a hospital, he was taken to a detention center with the bullet still lodged in his back. Only after Perez was able to call into a news conference the following night to report he was not receiving any medication and was losing feeling on the left side of his body, did ICE return him to a hospital. Less than a day later, he was back in detention once again.

We only know about Wilber because it was caught on camera.

• In another facility in Houston, feeding tubes were surgically forced into conscious hunger strikers, a practice human rights organizations worldwide condemn as medical torture.  

• Nationwide, pregnant women are facing severe conditions, including denial of prenatal vitamins, lack of timely emergency care for heavy bleeding, and instances of being shackled or restrained during medical complications according to reports.

We didn’t learn about any of this from medical providers working inside or their governing boards.

Most of what the public knows about the medical conditions in ICE camps comes from more than 160 emergency calls obtained through records requests. Families are resorting to dialing 911 from other states to plead for care on behalf of loved ones inside, because the facility refused to act. The recordings are shocking.

• After ICE began blocking local 911 emergency services from entering their facilities, one recording reveals a nurse begging a 911 operator to help her send a choking man to the hospital while he writhes on the floor behind her.

• Another call recording reports a woman with COVID gasping in a facility that stocked no oxygen.

The people best positioned to expose all of this are the medical providers working inside these camps. Doctors, nurses, and medics tend to the people locked in these facilities. They witness the neglect and the deaths firsthand.

Licensed providers are bound by oath and by law to report ethics violations, and those reports move up the chain to institutions like the American Medical Association, the American Nurses Association, and the Federation of State Medical Boards.

The boards receive the documentation, yet they haven’t released any information to the public and not a single ICE facility has faced any accountability for burying what its own providers reported from inside these camps.

The bodies with that power owe the country a full public accounting of every atrocity and every instance of medical neglect in ICE custody.
