Advocacy for Métis-Informed Education - MNBC Citizens
In 2023, the Government of BC proposed amendments to Bill 40 - The School Amendment Act to enhance educational outcomes for First Nations and Indigenous students in provincial public schools. This initiative includes the establishment of Indigenous Education Councils (IECs) across all school districts.
Recently, the Province released guidelines mandating these councils to consult exclusively with local First Nations members regarding the integration of their languages, cultures, customs, traditions, practices, or histories. While this approach honours First Nations perspectives, it raises concerns about the representation of Métis voices on these councils.
Despite engaging in discussions with MNBC and Métis Chartered Communities on the Ministerial Order related to Indigenous Education Councils and Bill 40, the Provinces process has lacked equity and transparency. This falls short of meaningful consultation, essential for ensuring fair representation and inclusion of Métis perspectives.
MNBC recognizes that the years between kindergarten and grade 12 are critical in a child’s development. These formative years are vital for fostering cultural connections, identity, and a sense of belonging for Métis children. In response, MNBC is launching a citizen advocacy campaign.
We invite all MNBC Citizens to participate by signing a letter urging the government to enhance Métis representation on IECs. Your letter will be directly sent to Premier Eby, Minister of Education and Child Care Rachna Singh, and your local MLA. To join us, please read the letter and complete a brief form with your details (name, email, full mailing address).
Your involvement is crucial in advocating for Métis-informed education and the welfare of all Métis K-12 learners. Thank you in advance for your steadfast support in this important initiative.
