Minneapolis is Worth Fighting For
As Trump tears apart the federal government, we need City Hall to step up and lead with competent, data driven solutions that meet the day to day needs of our communities. After hearing from my Ward 2 constituents, I’ll be bringing forward 12 budget amendments to do just that. Here’s five I'm most excited about:
- Support development for a grocery store where residents are most impacted by food insecurity. Everyone deserves to have access to fresh and affordable groceries but the private market has failed to deliver this for too many Minneapolis residents.
- Undo Frey’s cuts to Emergency Housing Vouchers. Last year, City Council partnered with the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority and Hennepin County to provide housing and wraparound social services for our unhoused neighbors. Mayor Frey has refused to implement the partnership that would immediately provide housing for 50 individuals and 50 families. The solution to homelessness is housing, not encampment evictions.
- Launch a Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force to reduce gun violence. St. Paul's Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force has resulted in a massive decrease in gun violence and historic lows in homicides. Minneapolis should be doing the same.
- Continue investments in traffic calming. Last year, City Council increased traffic calming funding, resulting in a 155% increase in funded traffic calming projects. We need to continue to tackle the traffic calming project backlog because our communities deserve safe streets for our kids to play and grow up on.
- The rocketing costs of childcare is a crisis for Minneapolis families. 71% of metro child care centers said they would increase enrollment if more staff were available—it's time for Minneapolis to step up and support families struggling with the cost of child care.
City Council will be debating these budget amendments in the coming weeks before a final budget hearing and vote on Tuesday, December 9 at 6:05pm. Email the Minneapolis City Council today in support of Robin's budget amendments!
